The research application “Evaluation and improvement focusing on the utility of machine learning-based NIDS” was accepted to Toyohashi University of Technology Young PI Development Program 2022.

The threat of cyber-attacks has been increasing in recent years, and network-based intrusion detection systems (NIDS) that detect intrusion attacks at the network boundary, especially machine learning-based NIDS (MLNIDS) that can respond to unknown attacks, have attracted much attention. Although various MLNIDS have been proposed, most of them are evaluated only in terms of classification accuracy, not in terms of processing speed such as throughput and latency, or long-term operability, which are required in practical systems. In this research, we aim to put MLNIDS into practical use by (1) investigating machine learning models suitable for MLNIDS from the viewpoint of processing speed, and (2) discovering and solving operational issues through long-term operation of MLNIDS.
